Class 7 Learner's Licence
Obtaining your class 7 license is the first step towards being a fully licensed driver. In Alberta, we use a graduated licensing (GDL) program.
You must be at least 14 years old, and also pass a knowledge/vision test. You must have your Class 7 License for a minimum of 1 year from
the date of issue before you can go to the next step and take your Class 5 Basic drivers license road test.
When practicing driving, you must have a person who is over 18 and has a Class 5 Advanced Alberta Drivers
License in the front passenger seat.
You are also only allowed 8 demerits before receiving a suspension notice instead of 15 demerit points.
In addition, you must also follow the rules listed below:
- No driving between 12:00 am and 5:00 am
- Zero alcohol levels when driving at all times
- No driving more people than seat belts
If you are under the age of 18 you must have parental/guardian consent to take your class 7 learners license knowledge test by signing a
consent form at the registry you wish to take your test at.
Step One
Study the Basic License Driver's Handbook.

The questions range from basic rules of the road to road signs.
After you pass your knowledge test you will be given a vision test.
If you wear glasses, bring them as you will need them for the vision test but it is not required for your driver's license picture.

The test is administered electronically.
You will have 30 minutes to complete the test and are able to change your answers.
In the computer version you can skip questions and come back to them if you wish but once an answer is chosen it will be locked in. Once locked in it will tell you if you are correct right away.
The test is instantly over once you get 6 questions wrong regardless of what question you were on.
Take as much time as you need for the knowledge test. There is no time limit.
